Oxymoron

Yesterday my dad, Mason, Lex, and Lily hiked up the “Y” here in Provo, UT. It is actually quite a steep little climb, but not too long. It was extra special to have my dad there with us. He helped Mason make trail mix and we all wore a whistle after learning about hikes in the Cub Scout Bear Handbook. With every step we were thinking about how fun it was going to be coming down. The view of Provo was awesome once we reached the top and I was a proud mamma/daughter of my little children and dad. We passed college age guys who were even wondering “how much farther?”. By the way, Lily climbed this one for her dad. She is very excited to tell him that she did it all by herself. Last year she climbed it with Stephen and he had to carry her a little.

We had a great climb with minimal complaints and on the way down I set a goal for myself to be down by 3:00. I began running with Lily and Lex. Well, while Lexi was picking up momentum she must have swung her arms out and accidently hit Lily. Lily was not happy, she thought Alexis purposely hit her and began having a serious melt down. This happened at 2:55 and we still had a ways to get to the bottom. I tried to be nice and rationalize with her for a few minutes to no avail. I explained my goal and tried to distract her into the same goal. She wasn’t buying it. I then said, “If you can’t get in control you can wait here by the side of the road for Grandpa and Mason.” The tantrum escalated and she ran after me, still crying loudly.

Then, it happened. I lost control (10 days without dad around can do that to a mother with five children). As I was running down the mountain, I kicked Lily’s rear of steel with my left foot. It hurt, but I kept on running and yes I made my 3:00 goal. She kept on crying until we reached the car and then Grandma and cousins helped her forget about her recent woes. When I stopped running, I noticed that the toe next to my big one hurt even more and coninued to keep throbbing worse as the night progressed.

I think it is broken or at least severely sprained. Now everytime I take a step I get to remind myself to be more patient. As for Lily, apparently it didn’t leave a mark on her, because I asked how her bumb was and she looked at me with a puzzled look. I guess it was my turn to learn a lesson.

We’ll be glad when Daddy comes home!

glad as we can be…

Since the father of our home is out of the country for Father’s Day we decided to bring Father’s Day to him – hope he can catch a view of this before or at least on the day of! Thanks to my brother Brad for helping me out with this – he is the best!

Hope you have a good day Stephen – we love you!

We Pull Together!

This morning Alexis wanted to make a treat for the family. I suggested one of my childhood favorites, Salt Water Taffy. Before I knew it she was boiling the ingredients. It turned into a real family ordeal once they saw how much fun it was to pull and stretch it. Only bummer was it is fast Sunday so we had to wait until after church to sample it.

Chew!

Man this is tiring work!

Who makes May 31 a special day!

Alexis celebrated her eleventh birthday yesterday! Birthdays are very exciting happenings at our home. Everyone was up at the crack of dawn ready to open presents – Alexis probably woke everyone up! It is fun to celebrate the birth of one we love so much and count our blessings that she gets to live with us in our family. We learn much from Alexis and she helps make our home and the world a better place.

Here are eleven things that happened on her 11th birthday:

1. Woke up to open some fun gifts.

2. Was surprised and loved her very own hair dryer.

3. Chose to eat German Pancakes for breakfast.

4. Helped Stephen get a load of gravel for under our playground.

5. Happy to talk to Grandpa and Grandma Baldwin on the phone.

6. Was excited her Uncle Scott remembered her birthday and called from Texas.

7. Went swimming in the little canal and muddy pond at our house with dad, Mason, and Lily.

8. Washed her hair and used her new hair dryer.

9. Performed in her first gymnastic recital and had a fabulous time – she really enjoys it and is anxious to learn more and get even better (she started nine weeks ago and is very close to doing a back handspring on her own!).

10. Chose to go eat dinner with her mom and dad at Subway(just us three – oops and sleeping JT), instead of having a party.

11. Blew out all eleven candles, and ate a piece of birthday cake at 10 ‘o clock at night!

She was also very excited to get to see and talk to Grandpa and Grandma Parker on Friday via Skype. She will cherish the special email they sent her!

Alexis is growing into a fine young lady. We are very proud to call her our daughter!

Discoveries

Yuck = worms! Here are just a few of the fun things I found tonight in Mason’s backpack after he went to bed. I might add, some of them were more fun to see than others! It’s a good thing there wasn’t a mouse in there! One of the questions I am planning to ask are, “What are the worms for?” (Stephen wouldn’t let me get rid of them, but they are waiting outside in their natural habitat) Other question, “Just what are your plans for all of those rubber bands?” A side note, it took Mason forever to walk home from the bus today. I asked Lily and Lex where he was and they said he was trying to catch monarch butterflies. You’ve gotta love that fella!

Last week Mason was given a challenge by his dad. At breakfast on Thursday, Stephen told Mason if he passed all of his times tables off before the end of school on Friday they would go to the new Indiana Jones movie. Well he came home from school THAT DAY and told us he had passed all 5 sets that he needed. Apparently he works well when he is given the right incentive! We went to the movie, yes I invited myself, on Monday with Grandma Baldwin. It was great and Mason said it was well worth getting all of those times tables passed off. Another thing, we went to Sam’s Club Monday morning. Stephen surprised us by putting a bag of Swedish fish in the cart. In the car everyone was given a serving size. A few minutes later, Mason called from the back seat. I turned around to see a dog manufactured from Swedish fish. I was impressed by his creativity, and it really did look like a dog. Too bad I didn’t have a camera.

On Sunday, Mason gave a great talk in Primary. He was hesitant like usual and he really didn’t want to do it. He says it is scary to give talks in front of all of the people. Stephen told him to think that all of the people were in their underwear (remember the Brady Bunch, when Marsha had to give her speech?) I was extra proud as he stood up and spoke loud and clear and taught his friends about honesty. He is a missionary in training and looked very handsome in his suit coat and tie. He proved he can do hard things.

Matt and Mason have a thing with rubber bands. I haven’t found worms in his backpack though, that would put me over the top. Save some symphony bar for me.

The developmet of great youn men is an interesting process. It looks like it’s going well with Mason. I know what I used to do with rubber bands. They are very useful things to have. (I won’t say what I did with them. The list is too long but mostly good.)

Let’s go fishing with those worms. We could shoot down some monarch’s with the rubberbands and enjoy some chocolate as we do it. Keep up the fish molding. (It is a creative way to get more candy.) I have used that one before. You looked sharp in the suit. Maybe you will be a seminary teacher someday.

Fairy Tale Fifth Grade

Mrs. Galbraith’s fifth grade cast (our class) 2007-2008I was the Little Mermaid in my class fairy tale play last Thursday. We broadcasted it four times. Once for the fourth graders, once for the fifth graders, once for the sixth graders, and once for the parents! I was chosen by my teacher to introduce everyone and then close the show at the end. I had a lot of fun and hope to be in another play soon! Thanks Jana for trying to help me find a costume – I ended up using the one my teacher had. I hope you guys can be in a play too someday.

Broadway

Dancing SistasMelanie’s Dance welcomed us to “Broadway” last night. Lex and Lily had their end of year dance recital. They were so excited and did very well. It is fun to watch Alexis’ progress from last year and see Lily keeping with the beat her first year!

Alexis’ class did a tap dance to Greased Lightening from Grease. A ballet dance to Chim Chim Cheree from Mary Poppins and a gymnastic dance to Popular from Wicked. Her favorite dances were Greased Lightening and Popular.

Lily’s class did a gymnastic dance to Mamma Mia from Mamma Mia. (they looked so cute in their boot spats!) A ballet dance to Part of your World from Little Mermaid and a tap dance to a Broadway Medley. Her favorite dance was to Broadway Medley.

Special thanks to Mason for gladly entertaining Olivia out in the hallway for the two hour production! JT enjoyed the loud music and dim lights and didn’t start fussing until the last 20 minutes. Stephen was in true character as camera man. We had to send apologies to the people around us for all of our public displays, all of which included Olivia.

Until next year! (Oh, just kidding – I think they are moving on to taking just gymnastics)

Honesty

he may think he can’t cook the perfect mellow but he is honest…mellow looks good to me though.Last night while we were at Wal-Mart Mason showed something that would have been hard for me to do the same. He was standing in line to ask the cashier the price of a Lego kit, when he noticed a $5 dollar bill on the ground. Without even thinking he picked it up and handed it to the cashier. I think the cashier thought he was paying for his Lego kit, but he quickly said, “someone lost this” it would have been so easy for him to keep just pay for the toy with it and have a free toy. He taught me that honesty is not negotioable. Way to be Mason.
