Thinking Man

Here is a shot of Mason sitting in anticipation to kick off his first Idaho History scholastic bowl. He did a great job and hung in there for quite awhile. Great Job Mason.

We were thinking that he looked like he was thinking of giving that girl next to him a little kiss on the cheek. Just kidding, he looked determined and cool.

Mason, what a smart and handsome young man you are! Isn’t Idaho History a blast? I remember when my dad, brother and I made a cool Idaho History binder out of wood with hinges. I put lots of Idaho history information inside it. I was so pleased with it when it was completed! I still have it today!!! Save your special stuff! Mine is 52 years old now. I hope you had fun doing your Scholastic Bowel. XOXO G. Baldwin

You and Grant will have to have a “bowl off” at one of our family get-to-gethers. It would have been fun to have been there. I remember when your mom was in 4th Grade – we didn’t do stuff like that – but wish we had. It’s a great opportunity to learn Idaho History. Thanks for being a good boy, Mason; keep up the good work.

Can you sing all the verses of “Here we have Idaho”? I made a pillow with the Mt. Bluebird and the Syringa flower on it. Idaho is the coolest!

Cutest boy in the whole school!

Mason came home from school a couple of weeks ago with this note! That girl is very smart and I would have to agree with her. Mason was flattered, but basically matter of fact about receiving this note.

Guess what Mason gave for his class valentines – of course origami hearts! He made 24 hearts in an hour! His teacher received the big one with the fancy valentine paper he is holding.

You are super cool, Mason! What a great idea to make orgami hearts for your friends. A gift from the “heart” that you make is truly a gift of love. I love friends. It’s good to have as many as you can. You are “The Man” Mason. I love you. XOXO G.Baldwin

Anaconda Squeeze

On Sunday night after I said good-night to my kids, Mason got half-way down the stairs then hurriedly ran back. He said he forgot to give me something. He then gave me the “anaconda squeeze” – it quickly became my favorite part of the day! He is a sweet boy and I hope he will always give out the “anaconda squeeze”.

He knows just how to flatter me too…whenever I play the piano I usually see him poke his head in or come and sit down to listen.

Last night when I told my kids that their thrown down backpacks and snowy boots were talking to me (saying my mom is a servant) he was the first one to rally everyone to clean up the mess. I love this guy!

iCar

Meet iCar the latest in Pinewood Derby cars. Mason invented this little fella to scale of my iphone. It turned out to be a cute little thing, and pretty fast too. It even sports the camera on the back side.

He also received his Bear Award tonight – that is why he has red paint on his cheeks. He is quite a happy Cub Scout, it is one of his favorite things to do every week! He won the “Most Unusual” Award of the night.

He commented on how one of the boys must have thought that the pinewood derby is all about winning. When we asked him what it is about he said, “learning about sportsmanship, and having fun building a car”. We have to thank the “Down and Derby” movie he has been watching (thanks Grandma B) to help reinforce what we’ve tried to teach.

He definitely had fun coming up with his idea (he saw a larger version on the internet, he modified it to make it his own) and was a great sport.

notice it is upside down so we had to take another shot

Paper Airplane Incentives

If you want Mason to do something for you, all you have to do it give him the right incentive. He could move heaven or earth! He found an airplane calendar that I bought that was half price. He wondered who it was for? Of course it was for him, but I was saving it for a possible birthday present. He was really excited with his sparkling eyes and I just wanted to give it to him, but new that wouldn’t be the best parenting – giving a kid something just because he wants it.

I noticed that my walkway needed to be shoveled – this is his job anyway, but it isn’t his favorite. I came up with a plan – “Mason, every time you shovel the sidewalk you can have 2 airplanes from the calendar.” He was so excited he ran to get his shovel barely stopping to get his shoes on. He worked so fast I couldn’t believe it! He was so happy to get his airplanes…and by then he really DESERVED them.

I have heard his voice longingly looking out the window wondering when it was going to snow again….

Motivation is the key to teaching. Mason doesn’t mind hard work anyway. He probably enjoyed doing the walk and getting the paper planes.

Mason’s Christmas

Mason loves Christmas. He loves getting out of school and he loves playing in the snow with family, and he loves getting presents. This year he learned about Charity and had as much fun giving and serving as he did opening his presents. It was great to see his smile and excitement as he got caught up in the tasks our elf left for us to do – he kept vigil watch for her notes and was the first one in line to carry out the tasks.

Christmas Eve all of the children had a sleep over in Mason’s room. He was happy to wake up Christmas morning to find an MP4 player (even though he really wanted a nintindo DS), he loves his origami calendar and playing marbles left in his stocking. He really loved playing games with his family including Grandpa and Grandma Baldwin who stayed with us for Christmas again this year!

The only bad thing about Christmas is the realization that school must begin once again. It was a sad Sunday evening for Mason as he thought of the days ahead at school – we are so glad that he loves to be home, and proud of him for going to school everyday even though he really, really, really doesn’t enjoy it. For someone so smart it seems kind of funny! Gotta love this kid!

Solar System Exhibit

Here I am with my project in my classroom.Today was my 4th grade Solar System project. We got to walk around and look at all of the kids projects. Me and my mom got to make cookies last night to share with the class. My dad helped me build my solar system model. I drew a design and then we made it using balls from around the house and some we bought from D.I. Look close at the last planet (Pluto) it is a b.b. My dad drilled a hole through it. I wrote the diameters, the distance from the sun, and the temperatures. My favorite planet is the sun because it was a princess bouncy ball, which is funny (the sun was actually suppose to be 3xs bigger than that). The most interesting planet to learn about was Jupiter because it is the biggest planet. Somebody made a solar system using pumpkins and another person made one from potatoes – they were cool.

This is us when we were making it.

We used fish line to tie the planets to the board.

I got a 300 out of 300 A+ on my Solar System book.

It was fun to have Olivia and JT come see me. My friends that are girls kept saying they were so cute.

Hands that stay busy

airplane aholicMason’s hands are always working … seriously! They don’t rest until his eyes close and he is finally asleep, most nights we have to pull the paper out of his hands and be the one to turn out the lights. When we see Mason in the morning his hand is connected to a piece of paper in folding motions. We really don’t know how many trees have suffered for the cause of origami creations and countless airplanes. After picking up one too many airplanes off of the ground, on the table, in the bathroom, backpack, piano, computer desk, couch, etc., we finally had the good sense to use them for room decor. The only stipulation for “making the ceiling” is that no one airplane can be alike. These are only a “few” of the many, many planes created by Mr. Mason.

Even though this has become an obsession and sometimes have to use “no airplane making” as a punishment, we are glad that Mason’s mind is at working and he isn’t sitting around being bored or a couch potato.

Stephen, Lexi, Tara, and Mason hung these up on Sunday Evening.

Move over McCain

We were on our way to church today when from the back seat Lex started freaking out. She said, “Mom have you seen Mason’s eye brows?!” I looked back at Mason and couldn’t help but laugh – really hard! Alexis asked, “Why did you do that? Are you trying to be like John McCain?”

Rewind a few weeks…when we were at the cabin we were having a dialogue with our friends about a Time magazine cover of John McCain. He had obviously had his eyebrows shaved from the previous cover. Anyhow – Mason must have overheard?

What happened is Alexis and Lily were getting shower caps out of our storage room this morning. In the same box (our soap storage, etc. box) he found a disposable razor. He definitely got curious – I wondered what was taking him so long in the bathroom? Really he can’t give us a straight answer on why he did it – we are just glad it is Halloween this week and maybe we can incorporate this into his costume.

FYI – he also gave his left arm a shave. I really needed a good laugh – thanks Mason for making me laugh harder than I have in a very long time! I am also very proud of Mason for being such a good sport!

Mason, I thought you were supposed to wait until there was more than peach fuzz on the chin! Maybe it’s not John McCain you are trying to emulate but Michael Phelps! He looks for all kinds of ways to make his body smooth so he can increase his speed in the water! Can’t wait until Thanksgiving to check out those eyes! Maybe some Reed’s Dairy Chocolate milk will help out the situation.

Enjoy shaving while it is fun. I could probably stand to take a shaver to my eyebrows. They are longer than the hair on my head these days. Your dad would have shaved the word Jodi in his chest hair a long time ago if he had a little bit more. Great Blog. Lots of laughs.
