A Few Good Things

Happy to eat my pink peppermint cany. They never taste as good as they do when I’m at Grandpa and Grandma’s house.I woke up this morning from a restless night and with a killer headache. I told Stephen that I needed to sleep in a little. He helped keep everything under control so that I could rest a bit. A GOOD HUSBAND helped me out!

This morning I noticed I had some bananas that were going bad. In an attempt to save them from the garbage I decided to make a quick batch of banana bread. Yummy, yummy, yummy I’ve got love in my tummy! Smelled GOOD and tasted GOOD.

JT decided to eat at very convienient times today! We were able to get to church on time and without too much stress! GOOD TIMING!

We got to church and I heard a GOOD TALK. I was in the mother’s lounge listening to the other ward’s sacrament meeting. A cute girl from Chile was talking about her conversion story. It was very touching. She said several times that she had a GOOD life before she was baptized, but now it is so much better. She was so grateful for the sacrifices that missionaries make to take the gospel truth to people all around the world. I thought about Bruce and Sharon and what GOOD things they are doing for others in Portugal.

You know, there are some GOOD PEOPLE in Sugar City. It has taken me some months to embrace this fact, but it is true. I have enjoyed getting to know their GOOD HEARTS.

Speaking of GOOD PEOPLE – Our friends, the Galers, stopped by to drop off something that Scott got for me while in China. I was reminded how nice it is to have GOOD FRIENDS.

We took our family to Blackfoot tonight for a Baldwin Family Home Evening. It was GOOD to see aunts and uncles and cousins and my Grandma. My Grandma is a silent giant who has done countless GOOD DEEDS all of her 93 years of life. I loved to see her happy smile tonight. She is very gentle and kind. Two characteristics I wish I had more of.

While I was at Grandma’s house, with the help of Lily we found the pink dish that holds the peppermint candies! (remember my nostalgia with these from my Grandpa Gussy post?) I was happy to indulge myself to eat this GOOD TREAT.

What a GOOD LIFE I had today.

And now it’s time to say, GOOD NIGHT.

This was the coolest toy ever! I loved playing on it when I was a kid. Doesn’t look too safe though!

“Don’t eat Pete” game.

Pin the tag on the missionary Mason!

Olivia helping give out the treats.

Grandma using “skype” to talk to my dad and mom.

Jodi (and Stephen), I wasn’t sure where the best place was to comment with a big THANK YOU for capturing Tara on Idaho’s 6 o’clock news for us. We hope to catch up to your technical expertise if and when we can keep Tara home long enough to teach us a thing or two. It was great having Tara home for a week. We had many good family times, and look forward to the day when we can record them in a family blog site such as this. I also want to let Jodi know that I just got called as Primary President in our ward and it appears she’s into Primary, so I may be calling to pick your brain for ideas. I’ve served in every part of Primary over the years, and I have loved it. I hope I will love being the President as much as being with the children.

What’s for dinner?

As requested, here is my menu for April. I like using it – it takes the guess work out of what to make for dinner. PLUS- my kids always know what is on the agenda, therefore there is less complaining. I guess they just gear up for a night that they aren’t excited about and eat a big lunch! 🙂 I usually figure out which ingredients I will need for the week and just go out once a week to the Grocery Store. Click on Simplify 101 for a grocery shopping list that I found from Anne’s link: Simplify 101 Happy Cooking…and if anyone has a great meal idea that your family likes please share it with me!

I am in AH of your menu! We talked about it the whole way home. It is a great idea and I am sure keeps you on a good budget. I really need to get in gear and plan better. I usually cook three meals a week, other nights we eat really really simple. Quesadillas, cottage cheese & tomatoes. Homeade bread and peaches. Thanks for the jump start into better planning. I am sure it would save me a ton of money if I planned better

For Ladies Only

For Ladies Only … read at your own risk if you aren’t. My mom sent me this email today and I thought it was so funny, and I needed a good laugh! I think I will have to print it up for Aunt Dot!

ISN’T THIS THE TRUTH ??????
You may need to stop at the women’s restroom . . . be prepared!

When you have to visit a public bathroom, you usually find a line of women, so you smile politely and take your place. Once it’s your turn, you check for feet under the stall doors. Every stall is occupied.

Finally, a door opens and you dash in, nearly knocking down the woman leaving the stall. You get in to find the door won’t latch. It doesn’t matter, the wait has been so long you are about to wet your pants! The dispenser for the modern ‘seat covers’ (invented by someone’s Mom, no doubt) is handy, but empty. You would hang your purse on the door hook, if there was one, but there isn’t – so you carefully, but quickly drape it around your neck, (Mom would turn over in her grave if you put it on the FLOOR!), yank down your pants, and assume ‘ The Stance.’

In this position your aging, toneless thigh muscles begin to shake. You’d love to sit down, but you certainly hadn’t taken time to wipe the seat or lay toilet paper on it, so you hold ‘The Stance.’ To take your mind off your trembling thighs, you reach for what you discover to be the empty toilet paper dispenser. In your mind, you can hear your mother’s voice saying, ‘Honey, if you had tried to clean the seat, you would have KNOWN there was no toilet paper!’ Your thighs
shake more.

You remember the tiny tissue that you blew your nose on yesterday – the one that’s still i n your purse. (Oh yeah, the purse around your neck, that now, you have to hold up trying not to strangle yourself at the same time). That would have to do. You crumple it in the puffiest way possible. It’s still smaller than your thumbnail.

Someone pushes your door open because the latch doesn’t work. The door hits your purse, which is hanging around your neck in front of your chest, and you and your purse topple backward against the tank of the toilet. ‘Occupied!’ you scream, as you reach for the door, dropping your precious, tiny, crumpled tissue in a puddle on the floor, lose your footing altogether, and slide down directly onto the TOILET SEAT. It is wet of course. You bolt up, knowing all too we ll
that it’s too late. Your bare bottom has made contact with every imaginable germ and life form on the uncovered seat because YOU never laid down toilet paper – not that there was any, even if you had taken time to try. You know that your mother would be utterly appalled if she knew, because, you’re certain her bare bottom never touched a public toilet seat because, frankly, dear, ‘You just don’t KNOW what kind of diseases you could get.

By this time, the automatic sensor on the back of the toilet is so confused that it flushes, propelling a stream of water like a fire hose against the inside of the bowl that sprays a fine mist of water that covers your butt and runs down your legs and into your shoes. The flush somehow sucks everything down with such force that you grab onto the empty toilet paper dispenser for fear of being dragged in too.

At this point, you give up. You’re soaked by the spewing water and the wet toilet seat. You’re exhausted. You try to wipe with a gum wrapper you found in your pocket and then slink out inconspicuously to the sinks.

You can’t figure out how to operate the faucets with the automatic sensors, so you wipe your hands with spit and a dry paper towel and walk past the line of women still waiting.

You are no longer able to smile politely to them. A kind soul at the very end of the line points out a piece of toilet paper trailing from your shoe. (Where was that when you NEEDED it??) You yank the paper from your shoe, plunk it in the woman’s hand and tell her warmly, ‘Here, you just might need this.’

As you exit, you spot your hubby, who has long since entered, used, and left the men’s restroom. Annoyed, he asks, ‘What took you so long, and why is your purse hanging around your neck?’

This is dedicated to women everywhere who deal with a public restrooms (rest??? you’ve GOT to be kidding!!). It finally explains to the men what really does take us so long. It also answers their other commonly asked questions about why women go to the restroom in pairs. It’s so the other gal can hold the door, hang onto your purse and hand you Kleenex under the door!

This HAD to be written by a woman! No one else could describe it
so accurately!

I think we have all been in that same situation at least once in our lives!! Throw in a couple kids that you are trying to keep off the filthy floor or trying to expose you before your ready to exit while doing the rest mentioned above and you have had a work out that counts as your exercise routine for the rest of the week at least! I once went to a restroom in the mall in Ogden and a lady ran in before me she had to go a lot worse than me her daughter that was with her kept saying you “really did have to go you are stinky mom…wow” over and over I felt really bad for her.

ketchup or catsup?

Here’s what it is:
n. A condiment consisting of a thick, smooth-textured, spicy sauce usually made from tomatoes.

Where the heck did it get it’s name?

“Word History: The word ketchup exemplifies the types of modifications that can take place in borrowing both of words and substances. The source of our word ketchup may be the Malay word kēchap, possibly taken into Malay from the Cantonese dialect of Chinese. Kēchap, like ketchup, was a sauce, but one without tomatoes; rather, it contained fish brine, herbs, and spices. Sailors seem to have brought the sauce to Europe, where it was made with locally available ingredients such as the juice of mushrooms or walnuts. At some unknown point, when the juice of tomatoes was first used, ketchup as we know it was born. But it is important to realize that in the 18th and 19th centuries ketchup was a generic term for sauces whose only common ingredient was vinegar. The word is first recorded in English in 1690 in the form catchup, in 1711 in the form ketchup, and in 1730 in the form catsup. All three spelling variants of this foreign borrowing remain current.”

So now I’m curious, What exactly is “in” my bottle of ketchup?

Here are the ingredients that are in the bottle located in my fridge:
Tomato concentrate (water and tomato paste), high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, (uh-oh Dr. Oz will not be happy), vinegar, salt, onion powder, spice and natural flavoring.

HUH…there ya go, a lesson about ketchup (that is how it is spelled on my bottle).

Crush

“I’ve got a crush on you, sweetie pie, all the day and nighttime hear me sigh. I never had the least notion that I could fall with so much emotion…because I have got a crush my baby on you!” I love this song sung by, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand!

Do you remember your first crush? I was in first grade, but it wasn’t until around fifth grade that I think it meant something. I was so excited when I got to be partners in the square dance for the end of school program with guess who, my crush! I thought it was great until I slipped and fell during the performance.

I wonder what it is that made us feel so twitter pated…is it that we think this person is so cute, we like the attention, or that we feel cool that we can talk about having a boyfriend? Probably all of that and more. One thing I know for sure is that boyfriends do not equal worth! I think I always have know that, I feel bad for girls that have to learn that the hard way. Anyway…

Now here I am as a parent experiencing the “crush” through my child’s perspective. It is fun and cute, BUT I find my protective mothering instincts kicking in. We have been receiving phone calls from a boy for Alexis almost every Friday night, and he is a sixth grader – sometimes he even leaves a message! I know I was not that brave back then. I find myself wondering if this kid is noble, nice, and good enough for my daughter! HELLO – I know it is fifth grade, but I am a planner!

It has been really funny to watch Stephen’s reactions too – he keeps telling me to make sure I keep things in check with Alexis and she knows the proper boundaries for fifth grade romance! Too funny – he is mildly freaking out, even though he understands how it goes when you’re that age. We made a deal with Alexis – if she could feel comfortable showing us notes that she receives and writes she is “in check”. In fact, I told her that maybe I’ll write a note for Stephen and we can read each others.

She really is a great girl and apparently someone else thinks that too.

Crushes – “puppy love: temporary love of an adolescent”, you’ve gotta love ’em!

Crash and Burn

Reality vs. Idealism

Waking up with a blazing headache vs.Sleeping in
Yelling to be heard vs. Rationally explaining my needs
Missed Family morning time vs. Enjoying my family and wishing them a happy day
Overwhelmed and Over tired vs. Having it “all together”
Still in my pajamas vs. fitting into my pre-pregnancy clothes
Not getting exercise vs. going outside for some fresh air and riding my new bike
Loading up the car seats to take Lily to school in my pjs vs. Making it on time for the bus

Reality is setting in and I had a crash and burn morning! Crashed by loosing control and acting like an imbecile and Burned by feeling guilty about it.
Good thing tomorrow is a new day!

The sun will come out tomorrow ….

Beautiful Day

At the Teton Dam Relay last year…any takers for this year? Finally – Clear skies and the sun is out! I ventured out with the little dude to get my hairs cut. While out I noticed things like a bird on the top branch of a tree, people outside without a coat on, water rolling down the hill from a melting snow pile, and the Madison High cross country team running up Mill Hollow road.

Then I started having visions – the vision of me riding my brand new bike up the hill to the Rexburg Temple, and then the vision of me listening to my ipod tuned into “Beautiful Day” by U2 as I run past the Sugar City Cemetery. I have been called out to play by the sun. It came tempting me to come out and play, but I had to say no for today. Not to worry I will be out very, very soon – I saw it in my vision and I can’t wait!

Mother of Five

I am now a mother of five children! So far so good – I am also not living in reality yet! I haven’t left the house much for over a week, and all I am doing is baby stuff. Stephen and the rest of the crew have been great helping with everything else. It is so fun to have a baby in the house again.

JT is so sweet and heavenly! I love to smell his skin, kiss his cheeks and hold his little hand with my finger or just stare at him. His feet and toes are so miniature, what a miracle.

I took him to the doctor on Monday to get his PKU shot. When they called his name, Joshua Parker, it took me off guard. I have never thought of him as that or called him that yet – it has always been JT. I like it though, just need to adjust my thinking. By the way, he didn’t even cry when they drew his blood, just gave a little grimace. Later that day a lady from the ward was here bringing dinner right in the middle of his dinner and he would not stop crying! Thus I discovered what a little man he is – he is tough with the pain, but when he’s hungry he won’t put up with anything! As you can tell he has been a great baby so far, only crying if he has a need. Once the need is met he is back to sleeping.

Yesterday when he woke up I noticed his left eye was sealed shut with goop. I think he has a clogged tear duct like Lily did. That is not fun for him, but a minor concern. Hopefully it won’t last as long as Lily’s did – 8 months. He also has a tied tongue – like Mason. They aren’t going to clip it because it isn’t effecting his eating. (Same story as Mason) Mason thinks it is cool to have the company.

Stephen added the audio of his cute little cry and snorting – click on the file below his photos. I just love my baby boy!!!

Mom to the Fifth Degree

I am now a mother of five children! Joshua Taylor (JT) joined our family on Tuesday, February 26th at 6:42 pm. What a precious baby boy sent from heaven. He is so sweet and pure. I love to watch him and his facial expressions and feel his very real spirit. He just makes me smile. I just don’t ever want to forget every detail of these precious days to me. From holding his tiny little hands and kissing his tiny feet – I just want to seer it into my memory and hold on, because I know he will grow up (as he is suppose to) – it just goes too fast. I am relishing the moments to be the mother of another infant, very grateful that I am entrusted to take care of him and bring him up in this mortal world. About a year ago I began having feelings that someone was missing from our family and now here I am with this little bundle of joy and feeling complete. He is so special and full of great promise. My only reservation about all of this obviously is that I can’t freeze this moment forever and that days will turn into years and life with keep on changing. My hope is that he will reach the potential he is designed to achieve and that I can be the guide he needs on his journey. I love my life and being a mom. My patriarchal blessing states that I will find no greater joy than being a mother and it is true. My children are the jewels of my crown, I love them all. I hope to slow my life down and hone in on the important things that make a difference in eternal perspectives. I have faith and testimony that families are forever – My greatest hope and desire is that I can pass that on to all five of my children and that they will have a desire to carry on this sacred tradition.

Feeling the Love

Isn’t 33 a cool number? I like it – two 3’s. Today the digits rolled over and that is where I’ve landed. Part of me is wondering how I got this old while the other half is excited for the journey which lies ahead. Needless to say, it’s been a wonderful life.

I’ve decided tax return season and my birthday hit at good times! I was the recipient of a very indulgent gift. After over a year about talking and dreaming of a road bike the day has arrived! I cannot wait to put some miles on my new tires that Stephen so kindly presented to me. Alexis and Lily named her, “Zoe”. It’s a good thing there is a little snow out there still so I can concentrate on baby things for a few more weeks, eh? I am dreaming of the day when I can feel the wind against my face and breeze up and down the dry farms. (It has been a long fall/winter)

I also received a new set of scriptures! My other is now being retired to the cedar chest…I got them when I was a junior in high school (16 years ago for Christmas from my dad) At breakfast I told my kids that I felt like a missionary – getting a new bike and set of scriptures. I wondered out loud if there are many 33 year old pregnant women missionaries? I guess not proselyting ones.

My children were so cute and thoughtful. Alexis even bought me a $5 gift with her own money. If you know Alexis she is very particular at where she lets her money go, and she had to work hard to earn that money. Lily had $2 left in her purse at Winco Foods last night and with Alexis’ help she picked out a cute card and bought me some orange sticks. They were all full of hugs and Happy Birthday to you! Mason helped me make the birthday cake and everyone was so great at letting me just take it easy! Birthdays on Sunday are great and relaxing.

After dinner we played a game of Cadoo and I received calls from family and friends. We were even able to participate in the Baldwin Family Home Evening via Skype, pretty cool! Nothing like a birthday to help you feel loved and special.

Happy Birthday Jodi! You are already doing the best missionary work that is done on the earth.
“and if it so be that you should labor (even a little more meaningful) all your days… and bring save it be one soul…” And that one soul is Lily, or Mason, or Alexis, or Olivia, or even Stephen, how great will be your joy with them in the celestial kingdom.
