ketchup or catsup?

Here’s what it is:
n. A condiment consisting of a thick, smooth-textured, spicy sauce usually made from tomatoes.

Where the heck did it get it’s name?

“Word History: The word ketchup exemplifies the types of modifications that can take place in borrowing both of words and substances. The source of our word ketchup may be the Malay word kēchap, possibly taken into Malay from the Cantonese dialect of Chinese. Kēchap, like ketchup, was a sauce, but one without tomatoes; rather, it contained fish brine, herbs, and spices. Sailors seem to have brought the sauce to Europe, where it was made with locally available ingredients such as the juice of mushrooms or walnuts. At some unknown point, when the juice of tomatoes was first used, ketchup as we know it was born. But it is important to realize that in the 18th and 19th centuries ketchup was a generic term for sauces whose only common ingredient was vinegar. The word is first recorded in English in 1690 in the form catchup, in 1711 in the form ketchup, and in 1730 in the form catsup. All three spelling variants of this foreign borrowing remain current.”

So now I’m curious, What exactly is “in” my bottle of ketchup?

Here are the ingredients that are in the bottle located in my fridge:
Tomato concentrate (water and tomato paste), high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, (uh-oh Dr. Oz will not be happy), vinegar, salt, onion powder, spice and natural flavoring.

HUH…there ya go, a lesson about ketchup (that is how it is spelled on my bottle).

Crush

“I’ve got a crush on you, sweetie pie, all the day and nighttime hear me sigh. I never had the least notion that I could fall with so much emotion…because I have got a crush my baby on you!” I love this song sung by, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand!

Do you remember your first crush? I was in first grade, but it wasn’t until around fifth grade that I think it meant something. I was so excited when I got to be partners in the square dance for the end of school program with guess who, my crush! I thought it was great until I slipped and fell during the performance.

I wonder what it is that made us feel so twitter pated…is it that we think this person is so cute, we like the attention, or that we feel cool that we can talk about having a boyfriend? Probably all of that and more. One thing I know for sure is that boyfriends do not equal worth! I think I always have know that, I feel bad for girls that have to learn that the hard way. Anyway…

Now here I am as a parent experiencing the “crush” through my child’s perspective. It is fun and cute, BUT I find my protective mothering instincts kicking in. We have been receiving phone calls from a boy for Alexis almost every Friday night, and he is a sixth grader – sometimes he even leaves a message! I know I was not that brave back then. I find myself wondering if this kid is noble, nice, and good enough for my daughter! HELLO – I know it is fifth grade, but I am a planner!

It has been really funny to watch Stephen’s reactions too – he keeps telling me to make sure I keep things in check with Alexis and she knows the proper boundaries for fifth grade romance! Too funny – he is mildly freaking out, even though he understands how it goes when you’re that age. We made a deal with Alexis – if she could feel comfortable showing us notes that she receives and writes she is “in check”. In fact, I told her that maybe I’ll write a note for Stephen and we can read each others.

She really is a great girl and apparently someone else thinks that too.

Crushes – “puppy love: temporary love of an adolescent”, you’ve gotta love ’em!

Crash and Burn

Reality vs. Idealism

Waking up with a blazing headache vs.Sleeping in
Yelling to be heard vs. Rationally explaining my needs
Missed Family morning time vs. Enjoying my family and wishing them a happy day
Overwhelmed and Over tired vs. Having it “all together”
Still in my pajamas vs. fitting into my pre-pregnancy clothes
Not getting exercise vs. going outside for some fresh air and riding my new bike
Loading up the car seats to take Lily to school in my pjs vs. Making it on time for the bus

Reality is setting in and I had a crash and burn morning! Crashed by loosing control and acting like an imbecile and Burned by feeling guilty about it.
Good thing tomorrow is a new day!

The sun will come out tomorrow ….

Beautiful Day

At the Teton Dam Relay last year…any takers for this year? Finally – Clear skies and the sun is out! I ventured out with the little dude to get my hairs cut. While out I noticed things like a bird on the top branch of a tree, people outside without a coat on, water rolling down the hill from a melting snow pile, and the Madison High cross country team running up Mill Hollow road.

Then I started having visions – the vision of me riding my brand new bike up the hill to the Rexburg Temple, and then the vision of me listening to my ipod tuned into “Beautiful Day” by U2 as I run past the Sugar City Cemetery. I have been called out to play by the sun. It came tempting me to come out and play, but I had to say no for today. Not to worry I will be out very, very soon – I saw it in my vision and I can’t wait!

Mother of Five

I am now a mother of five children! So far so good – I am also not living in reality yet! I haven’t left the house much for over a week, and all I am doing is baby stuff. Stephen and the rest of the crew have been great helping with everything else. It is so fun to have a baby in the house again.

JT is so sweet and heavenly! I love to smell his skin, kiss his cheeks and hold his little hand with my finger or just stare at him. His feet and toes are so miniature, what a miracle.

I took him to the doctor on Monday to get his PKU shot. When they called his name, Joshua Parker, it took me off guard. I have never thought of him as that or called him that yet – it has always been JT. I like it though, just need to adjust my thinking. By the way, he didn’t even cry when they drew his blood, just gave a little grimace. Later that day a lady from the ward was here bringing dinner right in the middle of his dinner and he would not stop crying! Thus I discovered what a little man he is – he is tough with the pain, but when he’s hungry he won’t put up with anything! As you can tell he has been a great baby so far, only crying if he has a need. Once the need is met he is back to sleeping.

Yesterday when he woke up I noticed his left eye was sealed shut with goop. I think he has a clogged tear duct like Lily did. That is not fun for him, but a minor concern. Hopefully it won’t last as long as Lily’s did – 8 months. He also has a tied tongue – like Mason. They aren’t going to clip it because it isn’t effecting his eating. (Same story as Mason) Mason thinks it is cool to have the company.

Stephen added the audio of his cute little cry and snorting – click on the file below his photos. I just love my baby boy!!!

Mom to the Fifth Degree

I am now a mother of five children! Joshua Taylor (JT) joined our family on Tuesday, February 26th at 6:42 pm. What a precious baby boy sent from heaven. He is so sweet and pure. I love to watch him and his facial expressions and feel his very real spirit. He just makes me smile. I just don’t ever want to forget every detail of these precious days to me. From holding his tiny little hands and kissing his tiny feet – I just want to seer it into my memory and hold on, because I know he will grow up (as he is suppose to) – it just goes too fast. I am relishing the moments to be the mother of another infant, very grateful that I am entrusted to take care of him and bring him up in this mortal world. About a year ago I began having feelings that someone was missing from our family and now here I am with this little bundle of joy and feeling complete. He is so special and full of great promise. My only reservation about all of this obviously is that I can’t freeze this moment forever and that days will turn into years and life with keep on changing. My hope is that he will reach the potential he is designed to achieve and that I can be the guide he needs on his journey. I love my life and being a mom. My patriarchal blessing states that I will find no greater joy than being a mother and it is true. My children are the jewels of my crown, I love them all. I hope to slow my life down and hone in on the important things that make a difference in eternal perspectives. I have faith and testimony that families are forever – My greatest hope and desire is that I can pass that on to all five of my children and that they will have a desire to carry on this sacred tradition.

Feeling the Love

Isn’t 33 a cool number? I like it – two 3’s. Today the digits rolled over and that is where I’ve landed. Part of me is wondering how I got this old while the other half is excited for the journey which lies ahead. Needless to say, it’s been a wonderful life.

I’ve decided tax return season and my birthday hit at good times! I was the recipient of a very indulgent gift. After over a year about talking and dreaming of a road bike the day has arrived! I cannot wait to put some miles on my new tires that Stephen so kindly presented to me. Alexis and Lily named her, “Zoe”. It’s a good thing there is a little snow out there still so I can concentrate on baby things for a few more weeks, eh? I am dreaming of the day when I can feel the wind against my face and breeze up and down the dry farms. (It has been a long fall/winter)

I also received a new set of scriptures! My other is now being retired to the cedar chest…I got them when I was a junior in high school (16 years ago for Christmas from my dad) At breakfast I told my kids that I felt like a missionary – getting a new bike and set of scriptures. I wondered out loud if there are many 33 year old pregnant women missionaries? I guess not proselyting ones.

My children were so cute and thoughtful. Alexis even bought me a $5 gift with her own money. If you know Alexis she is very particular at where she lets her money go, and she had to work hard to earn that money. Lily had $2 left in her purse at Winco Foods last night and with Alexis’ help she picked out a cute card and bought me some orange sticks. They were all full of hugs and Happy Birthday to you! Mason helped me make the birthday cake and everyone was so great at letting me just take it easy! Birthdays on Sunday are great and relaxing.

After dinner we played a game of Cadoo and I received calls from family and friends. We were even able to participate in the Baldwin Family Home Evening via Skype, pretty cool! Nothing like a birthday to help you feel loved and special.

Grandpa Gussy

Today I came across a photo of my Grandpa Baldwin. It made me get watery eyes and have happy thoughts. He was one of my favorite people ever. I thought I would share some of the memories I have of him:

At my house: As a little child it was always exciting to have him and grandma come and visit. We only had a three bedroom house, and all of the bedrooms were in use. So, my room was the room that had a double bed and therefore I got to sleep on the couch when they came. I didn’t mind at all, especially after all of the thanks and compliments I got for doing it.

For fun Grandpa would take one leg and one arm and have my dad take the other side. He would then take us over to the door and wack our rears against the door – it always generated lot of smiles and laughs! I think I just loved having the attention.

Also, whenever any of us children would leave the house when he was there he would call out, “Remember who you are, and choose the right!”

At his house: Grandpa and Grandma lived in a small, remodeled chicken coop behind my Aunt Serena’s house in Blackfoot. The ironic thing about that is he despised chickens! He hated eggs or eating chicken. If you passed them under his nose he would get a funny face.

When younger my grandpa upon seeing me would sing “Jodi Podi, pudding and pie – kissed the boys and made them cry…”

He would also take you on his knee and bounce you up and down to our delight.

When I grew up a little and started singing and playing the violin he would make me perform for a pink peppermint candy located always in the same pink dish.

He and grandma served 3 missions…one of them was on a Salt Lake Church History mission. I went down with the orchestra to perform at Christmas time and they came to see me. After that, he always greeted me as his favorite violinist.

The Saturday before Christmas all of the extended Baldwin Family gathered for the annual Christmas Party complete with a visit from Santa Clause! I thought this was just great. Grandpa would always read or tell the story of little orphan Annie and give every family a box of oranges.

So you might be wondering why the title, “Grandpa Gussy”. Well, he would call any of us grandkids gussy as he probed us and teased us with his cane. It became quite a game – especially for the great grandchildren, mine included.

On the frivolous things: One thing I joke about inheriting from Grandpa was his capability to be grouchy. Maybe I should say it is a learned trait – who knows? He could be get grouchy at times, but not as often as he was funny.

He was a good story and joke teller. One of my favorites was about a missionary that went to someone’s house and saw a bowl of peanuts sitting on the table. He was told to eat them up…after the visit they thanked him for eating those peanuts, because they weren’t able to do anything except suck the chocolate off of them.

On the important things: I still remember his request for me to read the Proclamation on the Family with Stephen often.

He had a wonderful testimony of the gospel which showed through his actions. When we sang Families Can Be Together Forever at a special Family Home Evening the night of his viewing, I couldn’t help but get excited about the truth of those words. I knew he would be happy in heaven seeing his family like that.

Grandpa was also very strict about being punctual! He did not like it when people arrived late for sacrament meeting or any event for that matter.

I love this man and am so glad that I was able to learn from him and get to be a part of his family. I love you Grandpa Gussy!

YES!!! Details do make a big difference. Today I got my van detailed. It was at the point of repulsion!!! Even Olivia noticed the stench. We had random caked on candy in hidden places, and who knows what in other places, not to mention the dirt. Now, I am in love with my van and want to be in it all of the time. They took out the seats and even cleaned the tracks and the windows and knobs are shining bright in the sun, again proud to perform their functions. I am doing a very happy, happy dance and would be proud to take anyone for a ride again. Clean is always in for me! Let’s go for a road trip!

Come to God’s Own Temple, Come

“That the work of gathering together of my saints may continue, that I may build them up unto my name upon holy places; for the time of harvest is come, and my word must need be fulfilled. Therefore, I must gather together my people, according to the parable of the wheat and the tares, that the wheat may be secured in the garners to possess eternal life, and be crowned with celestial glory, when I shall come in the kingdom of my Father to reward every man according as his work shall be…” Doctrine and Covenants 101:64-65

Last night Lily and I were able to attend the Rexburg Idaho Temple Celebration. It was indeed astounding! I could not believe how amazing it was. It was made up of random people from 84 wards in our temple district performing. Alexis was chosen to be one of the many, many children to carry sheaves of wheat. We were curious as to which Apostle would be present and to our delight we were privileged to have Elder David Bednar and Elder Russell Nelson along with Joe J. Christensen attending. Before it started Lily and I ran to the bathroom and upon returning the entire Hart Auditorium with people filled to capacity was completely silent, mind you there were also many children there. We discovered that the apostles of the Lord had entered the room, the reverence felt was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Elder Bednar urged the youth and children to always remember this moment and pray as we attend the dedication tomorrow that we will feel the spirit and remember what is was like to witness the newly called prophet in our presence. As the performance got underway it was definitely a celebration done so tastefully. They were able to get all of the emotions stirred as they told of the settlement of the valley up until the present. From the sprinkler pipe dance (representing the help rendered from college students at the time of the Yellowstone Fires)to the thunderous noises and commentary of the eruption of the Teton Dam and many more. There was also fiddling, barber shop choruses, and sacred hymns! John Bidwell directed this and he did an excellent job! I came home uplifted and inspired to be a better person. As I looked out on the youth that were performing I thought of what an amazing memory this will be for them and how they are the future that will carry on the traditions made here by the saints who sacrificed so much. What wonderfully fun people, it was also wonderful to see how much fun can be had in a simple, unworldly way. I am grateful Alexis was able to be a part of this celebration. She was so excited to tell me that she was three people away from Elder Bednar as she was walking out…I am sure she could feel how special he was as a called witness of Jesus Christ.
